ABOUT

As a gift to my mother for a landmark birthday, I wanted to develop a piece of furniture that was unique, personal and of great value to her. After much deliberation I decided on a vanity table! The vanity table is an interesting piece of furniture due to the fact that it is one of the few pieces in a married household which is solely used by the female spouse. It's a piece that is mostly undervalued and unrecognised but engaged with day in and day out. It also holds those items most treasured to its user, whether those are items with measurable value like jewelry, or objects with more emotional wealth such as family photos and collected trinkets.
Working to a rather vague brief, I knew the table would need to be simple but organic aligning itself with the design of furniture chosen in the rest of the house. The timber would need to be locally grown to give the desk a truly authentic Zimbabwean feel and the table would need to contain a lockable drawer to hold all of her jewelry and objects of importance.

The final design was made from Rhodesian Teek and Jacaranda with accents of brass highlighting 'engageable' elements. This included the handles for the drawer and a brass pin located at the back of the desk used to unlock the cabinet. The brass pin maybe seem obvious when the table is uncovered but once everyday use is applied the back of the desk is undoubtedly covered with perfume bottles, elixirs and potions which help to mask the location of the pin.
