The Brands Pushing Back Against Fast Fashion #SustainabilityMonth

Published by

Fashion has always been anathema to me. You could diplomatically refer to my wardrobe as “functional” and I’m unlikely to spend more than a few fleeting seconds deciding what to wear in the morning. I do, however, understand the appeal of fast fashion, particularly at a time when so many of us have so little.

Fast fashion tempts consumers with low prices and the ability to adapt to trends on the fly. But it comes at a severe environmental cost. As such, some fashion brands have decided to push back against the environmental and social costs associated with fast fashion.

These brands are not only redefining the industry’s standards but shaping consumer consciousness towards more responsible choices. Of course, there will always be those who just want a bargain and can hold their nose at the thought of adding to the literal landfill but for so many younger consumers, sustainability matters. To underline this fact, let’s take a look at some of the brands already leading the way.

Sustainable Practices and Ethical Production

One of the standout examples of commitment to sustainable fashion is Taylor Stitch, which uses entirely recycled and organic materials like organic cotton, recycled denim, and even yak wool. Their production practices ensure that all workers receive fair wages, and the brand actively engages in community projects and charitable giving, making sustainability a holistic practice.

The brand Neu Nomads, founded by industry veterans disillusioned with fast fashion's impact, focuses on clean supply chains and plant-based fabrics like TENCEL and eco-cashmere. Their commitment extends to eco-friendly dyes and a wide-reaching ethical stance across their global supply chain.

Innovative Approaches to Fashion

Brands are also innovating in how they offer their products. For instance, Haverdash operates a unique clothing rental service that encourages consumers to reuse and recycle fashion rather than purchasing new items. This subscription model not only extends the life of garments but also significantly reduces waste.

On the manufacturing front, companies like MagicLinen and Vege Threads focus on locally sourced, low-impact materials. MagicLinen uses sustainably sourced linen from Lithuania, promoting zero waste in its production processes. Vege Threads, on the other hand, makes all its clothing in Australia using organic and eco-friendly materials, supporting local industries and reducing carbon emissions.

Global Community and Inclusivity

Community involvement and inclusivity are also key tenets for many of these brands. VALANI, for example, not only uses sustainable materials like hemp and TENCEL but also ensures that their production facilities in Chicago and India adhere to strict ethical standards. They contribute a portion of their profits to female empowerment organizations, reflecting a commitment to social responsibility as well as environmental sustainability.

Internationally, meanwhile, brands like People Tree in the UK proudly use Fair Trade practices and organic materials, ensuring ethical labour conditions and reducing environmental impact. Their products are handcrafted using traditional techniques, which supports artisan skills and reduces carbon emissions from machinery.

These brands represent just a glimpse of the broader movement against fast fashion, showing that it is possible to enjoy high-quality clothing without compromising ethical values. So, the next time you’re idly perusing Shein for a bargain, maybe consider diverting your attention elsewhere, spending a little more and doing your bit for the planet. At very least, you’ll probably end up with something that will survive more than one wash!
