In 2016, we made a dream for us come true – creating staged holograms from A to Z and completely from scratch. We developed 5 ground breaking 3D hologram shows, each 30-40 minutes long, for the newest one of the TUI cruise liners.

Starting with the show concept, shooting it in a studio, post-producing it, setting up 3D sceneries and animations and thus creating full-on holographic images has been a very exciting challenge and turned out to be the perfect synergy of tech-driven project and ambitious creative exploration.
A project like this means completely rethinking traditional theatre set-ups, replacing outdated technology with high-tech frames and screens, sophisticated projectors and a multi-functional stage. Since the technology is all about bringing our creative vision to life, the technical part always went hand-in-hand with our creative work. It turned out to be the perfect synergy of tech-driven project and ambitious creative exploration.

Adding to the challenge, the holographic aspect of the shows meant we had to imagine every aspect of the show during all steps of shooting and preproduction: Any shot, detail or movement had to be preplanned for later animation – even when it was still very early days and all quite abstract.

Our goal was to craft a truly enchanting experience, where the talent and character of each artist would be perfectly portrayed. It’s all really diverse – some shows and segments feature plenty of interaction and an entire cast on stage, others focus on the performer’s body, set a certain scene or work with tracking … and then there’s also plain, pared down content to keep it all varied and interesting.
For the set, we came up with a 3D scene that works from most angles and perspectives, yet allows us to treat the audience to several different settings throughout the show. And to tie it all together, style- and storywise, we also created a representative character who opens all the shows.

In the end, it was simply amazing to see the holograms come to life for the very first time, featuring shows by stars like Jan Vogler, Flying Steps and Ute Lemper.

Seeing how our creative vision, light and sound effects came together and created a perfect, dazzling illusion made us incredibly proud.
